Garnock Sunday were born on the 13th of July 2008 when two seven-a-side teams
formed to take on RangersMedia in a friendly at Glasgow Green. Wearing a set of
borrowed kit, the team from Ayrshire were not disgraced as they lost 8-4. They
were to wait just over a month for their first victory, over Maryhill Jags,
with Robert McLeish scoring the winner in the final seconds of play. Garnock
went on to join the GDSFC that season and notched up a total of ten league wins
in a respectable 8th place finish.
The GDSFC changed dramatically over the years yet Garnock managed to maintain their position, throughout, in
the top division. The team were threatened briefly with the emergence of local
rivals Valley Thistle in the same organisation. The two sides competed for the
same local players and Garnock struggled from week to week. Thankfully the
'Green Army' persevered and managed their highest ever finish (3rd) as well as
two quarter final appearances in 2011/2012.
Martin Tocker and
Marc Robson can boast to have been at the club since their first season,
and have played a part in every season since, as Garnock continue their quest
to win some silverware. David Ward, had it not been for a bad injury, would
also hold the same honour and many others have been in or around the team for a
long time.
Garnock said farewell to the GDSFC in 2014 and joined the
Scottish Unity League. However, their stay was short. A mid-table finish and an
agonising quarter-final defeat in the cup was an admirable effort in a maiden
season but the opportunity to be founding members of the Glasgow Community &
Co-Operative League for 2015/16 was too good a prospect to overlook and Garnock
moved on again.
The Holy Grail was eventually found in 2015/16 and the
search for the elusive first piece of silverware was over on the 20th of
December 2015 as Garnock won the DMS Challenge Cup on penalties after a nail
biting final. The best was yet to come as the team also lifted the league
title undefeated.
In July 2018, they celebrated their 10 year anniversary as
a team with a meeting of a good load of well kent Garnock faces, old and new.
Garnock remain in the GCCL and have cruelly lost out some
other pieces of silverware, losing three finals in-a-row. One of penalty
kicks.
Martin Tocker said his farewells to the team after 11 years
in charge. Here's hoping the future is bright. |
